Visiting Governors Island for Glamping: What to Know Before You Go

Governors Island is one of those places that somehow still feels like a hidden gem despite sitting right in the middle of New York Harbor.

If you are planning to stay overnight with Collective Retreats, here are a few things worth knowing before you go.

The Island Is Bigger Than You Think

Governors Island is not huge, but it is much larger than many people expect. Bring comfortable shoes because you will likely do a fair amount of walking.

The Best Part Is Evening and Morning

One of the biggest perks of staying overnight is getting to enjoy the island after the day crowds leave and before everyone returns the next morning. It becomes incredibly peaceful.

Bring Wine or Snacks

Part of the fun is simply sitting outside and enjoying the views. Having your own wine or snacks makes that even better.

Be Prepared for Noise

While the island itself is peaceful, depending on the night, there may be party boats nearby that can disrupt the quiet later into the evening. We had one going around 2 a.m., and it definitely caught us off guard.

It Is a Splurge

Collective Retreats is not cheap. You are paying for the unique experience and location more than traditional luxury.

It Is Still Worth Doing Once

Even with the few downsides, it is one of the most unique overnight experiences you can have in NYC and is absolutely worth trying if you want something different.

Final Thoughts

Governors Island is one of the most unique places in New York City and offers a completely different pace from the rest of Manhattan.

Between the open green space, skyline views, historic buildings, and waterfront atmosphere, it feels like a true little escape despite being only minutes from the city.

Adding an overnight stay at Collective Retreats makes the experience even more memorable and gives you the rare chance to enjoy the island when most of the crowds are gone
