Visiting Zurich, Switzerland: What to Know Before You Go

Zurich is often seen as a financial capital first and a travel destination second. But spending even a couple of days here quickly changes that perspective. The city blends historic streets, lively nightlife, excellent food, and incredibly easy access to the Swiss Alps. You can wander medieval streets in the morning and be surrounded by waterfalls, glaciers, and mountain villages by the afternoon.


If you are planning a visit, here are a few things that are helpful to know before you go.


Zurich Is a Great Base for Exploring Switzerland

One of the biggest advantages of Zurich is its location. From Zurich you can easily reach some of Switzerland’s most famous destinations, including Lucerne, Interlaken, Grindelwald, and Lauterbrunnen. Many of these places can be reached by train in just a couple of hours. If you only have a short amount of time in Switzerland, Zurich makes a great base for day trips into the Alps.


Old Town Is the Best Place to Start

Zurich’s Old Town, known as Altstadt, is where you will find many of the city’s historic streets, shops, cafés, and bars. It is a great place to wander without a plan. Narrow cobblestone streets wind between centuries old buildings, and you will find everything from small bakeries to cocktail bars tucked into the area. It is also one of the liveliest parts of the city in the evening.


The Train System Is Incredibly Efficient

Switzerland has one of the best train systems in the world, and Zurich’s main train station is the largest transportation hub in the country. Trains are punctual, clearly marked, and easy to navigate even if you are traveling between multiple destinations. If you plan to move around Switzerland by train, consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass or booking tickets in advance through the SBB railway system.


Zurich Is Walkable but Hilly

Many of Zurich’s major sights are within walking distance, especially around Old Town and the city center. However, parts of the city can be surprisingly hilly, so comfortable walking shoes are a good idea. Public transportation such as trams and buses is excellent if you prefer to avoid longer walks.


Prices Are High but the Quality Is Excellent

Switzerland is known for being expensive, and Zurich is no exception. Meals, drinks, and hotels will often cost more than in other European cities. The upside is that the quality of food, service, and infrastructure is generally very high. Planning ahead and mixing casual meals with a few special experiences can help keep costs manageable.


Don’t Skip the Surrounding Nature

One of the most memorable parts of visiting Zurich is how quickly you can escape the city.

Within a short drive or train ride you can reach dramatic landscapes like Aare Gorge, Lake Brienz, Lauterbrunnen Valley, and the Bernese Oberland region. Even if you only have a couple of days in Zurich, setting aside time for a nature excursion is absolutely worth it.
