If you only have a couple of days in Zurich but want to experience the Swiss Alps, a day trip into the mountains is absolutely worth it.
One of the best surprises about Zurich is how easy it is to reach some of Switzerland’s most breathtaking landscapes. Within a few hours you can go from historic city streets to waterfalls, glacial rivers, alpine villages, and towering mountain peaks.
During our visit we spent one incredible day exploring the Bernese Oberland region, visiting Aare Gorge, Lake Brienz, Lauterbrunnen Valley, and several famous alpine towns along the way.
It ended up being one of the highlights of our entire Switzerland trip. Here is what that day looked like.
Why Take a Day Trip From Zurich
Zurich is a vibrant city, but the true magic of Switzerland often lies outside the urban centers. The Alps are surprisingly accessible, and many of the country’s most iconic destinations can be reached within two to three hours.
From Zurich you can visit places like:
Lucerne
Interlaken
Grindelwald
Lauterbrunnen
Lake Brienz
Each offers a completely different view of the Swiss landscape. If you are short on time, a well planned day trip allows you to see multiple destinations without changing hotels. We used a driver and trip through Tours by Locals but you can use any private local tour guide. We prefer this so they know the secrets, you don't have to worry about driving, can drink with lunch, and all the benefits. Also let me stress: PRIVATE TOUR.
Aare Gorge
One of the most unexpected highlights of our day was Aare Gorge. Carved by glacial water over thousands of years, the gorge forms a narrow canyon with towering rock walls rising above the river below. A raised walkway winds through the gorge, allowing visitors to walk directly through this dramatic landscape. The bright turquoise water rushing through the canyon creates a surreal atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. The walk itself is easy and takes about an hour, but the scenery makes it one of the most memorable natural locations in the region.
Lunch in Brienz
After the gorge we continued toward Lake Brienz, one of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland. The water here is an incredible shade of blue, surrounded by mountains and traditional alpine villages. We stopped for lunch in the town of Brienz at a lakeside restaurant where the views alone made the stop worthwhile. Sitting by the water with the Alps rising around us felt like one of those perfect travel moments that stays with you long after the trip ends.
Lauterbrunnen Valley
If there is one place that truly captures the magic of the Swiss Alps, it might be Lauterbrunnen Valley. The valley is surrounded by towering cliffs with waterfalls cascading down from above. Some of the waterfalls drop hundreds of meters from the cliffs into the valley below. It is easy to see why this landscape inspired stories and legends. In fact, Lauterbrunnen is widely believed to have inspired parts of Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
Even a short visit here is unforgettable. Walking through the valley floor surrounded by waterfalls feels like stepping into a painting.
Other Towns Along the Way
Depending on your route, a day trip from Zurich can also include several famous alpine destinations. Lucerne is known for its historic wooden bridge and beautiful lake views.
Interlaken sits between two stunning lakes and serves as a gateway to the mountains.
Grindelwald is one of the most famous mountain villages in Switzerland, surrounded by dramatic peaks and glacier views. Each destination offers something different, which makes the journey through the region just as memorable as the stops themselves.
Should You Do This Trip By Train or Guide
Switzerland has one of the best train systems in the world, so it is absolutely possible to plan this itinerary using public transportation. However, if you only have one day and want to see multiple locations, a private guide or small tour can make the experience much easier. During our trip we explored the region with a local guide through ToursByLocals, which allowed us to visit several places efficiently while also learning more about the region. It also gave us the flexibility to stop at viewpoints and smaller locations we might not have discovered otherwise.
Is It Worth It
Absolutely. If you are visiting Zurich and wondering whether it is worth leaving the city for a day, the answer is yes. The contrast between Zurich’s historic streets and the dramatic landscapes of the Alps makes the experience even more memorable. Within a single day you can see waterfalls, alpine villages, glacial rivers, and mountain lakes that feel completely different from the city you started in that morning. It is one of the best ways to experience Switzerland in a short amount of time.
