Packing for One Night Glamping on Governors Island

One overnight bag. Cozy clothes. Wine. Minimal effort.

Glamping on Governors Island is one of those trips where overpacking can make the experience worse instead of better.

You are walking from the ferry to your tent, exploring the island, and likely carrying your own bag the entire way. This is not the kind of trip where you want multiple bags, heavy luggage, or things packed "just in case." The good news is Collective Retreats provides a lot of the basics already, so packing for this stay is simple.

This post is about what I would pack specifically for a one-night glamping stay on Governors Island, not a general hotel stay.

The Overnight Bag Rule

This trip does not require much. A simple overnight bag or backpack is more than enough for one night. You do not want to drag a roller bag across the island, onto the ferry, or through gravel/grass paths if you can avoid it. Keep it light. Keep it easy.

If something does not serve a real purpose for one night, it probably does not need to come.

Clothing for the Governors Island Vibe

This is less about fashion and more about comfort. Governors Island is best enjoyed slowly, casually, and comfortably. You will likely spend most of your time walking, lounging outside, or relaxing in your tent. Comfortable daytime clothes work best.

Think:

Breathable tops

Leggings/joggers / casual pants

Comfortable shorts, depending on the weather

A cozy sweatshirt or light jacket for the evening

Comfortable pajamas/loungewear

Nothing overly structured or fancy is necessary unless you want it for photos.

Shoes Matter More Than You Think

Governors Island is bigger than many people expect and involves more walking than people realize. Bring comfortable shoes that you can walk several miles in without issue.

I would personally recommend:

Sandals / Birkenstocks for warm weather

Sneakers if cooler or if you plan to explore more extensively

No need for multiple pairs unless the weather requires it.

What Would Go in Kassie’s Bag for This Trip

This is what would actually earn its place.

Phone

Portable charging bank

Wallet

Lip balm

Sunglasses

Portable speaker/laptop/iPad for relaxing or movie night

Bottle of wine/drinks of choice

Favorite snacks/charcuterie type snacks

Reusable water bottle

Comfortable change of clothes

Pajamas/lounge clothes

Toiletries/makeup bag

Hair brush/minimal getting ready items

Comfortable shoes

Light jacket/sweatshirt

What You Do NOT Need to Bring

The tents/shower areas already provide many basics, so do not overthink it.

Skip bringing:

Full shampoo/conditioner/body wash setup

Extra towels

Hair dryers/bulky bathroom items

Overly large luggage

Multiple outfits "just in case."

Final Thought

Governors Island glamping is meant to feel easy. It is one of those trips where the less you bring, the more relaxed the whole experience feels. Pack light, bring what makes the night cozy, and focus more on comfort than anything else. A bottle of wine, a sweatshirt, and something good to watch at night honestly matter more than half the stuff most people instinctively pack.
