Based on a real trip hosting our nieces in New York City. Walking times assume an easy pace with stops.
This itinerary is designed for first-time NYC visitors, especially families traveling with teens during the summer. It balances walking, iconic sights, museums, food, and strategic air-conditioning breaks so the days feel full, but not exhausting.

Area: Midtown West / Hell’s Kitchen

Fly into Newark (EWR)
NJ Transit → Moynihan Train Hall
Walk to lodging in Hell’s Kitchen or Midtown

If timing works, enjoy skyline views from nearby viewpoints
Why this works: Low pressure after travel. Familiar food and minimal planning.

Transportation Notes
Walking: Best way to experience NYC
CitiBike: Electric and not. If you download the app, it will let you get your bike checked out, see paths, and check in spots. Just remember, a lot of locals use the bikes for commuting, so be kind in the mornings and nights on weekdays and choose walking if you can
Subway: Fastest backup when heat or fatigue hits
NYC Ferry: Scenic, affordable, air-conditioned
Rideshare/Taxi: Helpful late at night or with tired teens (reminder to watch for the Taxis that have the numbers lit up - that tells you it’s available)
