NYC with Teens: A 5-Day Walkable Summer Itinerary

Based on a real trip hosting our nieces in New York City. Walking times assume an easy pace with stops.

This itinerary is designed for first-time NYC visitors, especially families traveling with teens during the summer. It balances walking, iconic sights, museums, food, and strategic air-conditioning breaks so the days feel full, but not exhausting.

Day 1 – Arrival, Pizza & Fireworks

Area: Midtown West / Hell’s Kitchen

Walking: ~30–40 minutes total

Arrival

  • NJ Transit → Moynihan Train Hall

  • Walk to lodging in Hell’s Kitchen or Midtown

Evening

  • Dinner: 42nd Street Pizza (local + classic NYC slice stop)

  • Relax and settle in

  • If timing works, enjoy skyline views from nearby viewpoints

Why this works: Low pressure after travel. Familiar food and minimal planning.

Where to Stay (First-Time NYC Visitors)

Why this area works

  • Walkable to major sights

  • Excellent subway access

  • Wide range of hotel options

  • Easy food choices for all ages

Hotels to explore

  • YOTEL New York

  • Row NYC

  • Ink 48 Hotel

  • The Library Hotel

Food Stops That Worked Well for Us

Quick & Casual

  • 42nd Street Pizza

  • Sullivan Street Bakery

  • Sunac Market (breakfast sandwiches) - note this is our go-to since it’s on our block but any corner market will do!

Sit-Down & Fun

  • Playa Betty’s

  • Serendipity III (for frozen hot chocolate + experience)

  • EAK Ramen

  • Il Brigante

Dessert & Treats

(NYC food is endless - this list is intentionally short and tested on this trip specifically - If you are looking for other recommendations, please feel free to reach out. We have recs for everything from the best places to grab craft beer, vegetarian-friendly places, great desserts, hidden bars, and romantic dinner spots all over town.)

Transportation Notes

  • Walking: Best way to experience NYC

  • CitiBike: Electric and not. If you download the app, it will let you get your bike checked out, see paths, and check in spots. Just remember, a lot of locals use the bikes for commuting, so be kind in the mornings and nights on weekdays and choose walking if you can

  • Subway: Fastest backup when heat or fatigue hits

  • NYC Ferry: Scenic, affordable, air-conditioned

  • Rideshare/Taxi: Helpful late at night or with tired teens (reminder to watch for the Taxis that have the numbers lit up - that tells you it’s available)
